From the Heart:
Picture perfect. What does that even mean anyway? If you are a parent… especially of multiples…. When do you really ever have everyone looking picture-perfect? I think it’s more like, be yourself, and then you get what you get, a true time capsule of who your children are in that exact moment. It’s priceless. You’ve got fidgety, won’t smile, toothless, untucked, I won’t wear shoes, I don’t like dresses, messy hair… all in one place at one time, in the spirit of the holiday of course. 😉 And while it may frustrate you in the moment, we spend so much time and effort trying to make everyone look picture-perfect...I promise you will look back on it and smile and laugh. Why? Because you aren’t picture-perfect. You are messy and fun and perfectly imperfect. Send that holiday card that makes everyone else feel human.
Embrace these years. Some of my photo outtakes are my absolute favorites! Ducking the arm of the sibling next to you, grimacing simply because the picture is being taken, oh I have so many treasures! It gets easier as they get older, but it’s not as memorable. Now I have to lean into the forced, I don’t want to be here smile. Toothless has been replaced with a closed mouth “braces” smile.
One of my favorite traditions that I started with my kids is saving our holiday photo cards and playing a game of “Headbands” with them before they get thrown away. Without looking or giving names, can the person holding the card identify who is in the picture, based on clues that are given. I highly recommend it.
Happy holiday card season. Happy holidays. Thank you for sharing your children with us.
Hug your littles, it goes too fast.
Words of Wisdom:
We don’t need to curate special memories--we just need to let the moment BE the moment, however it plays out. -- Whitney Fleming
